Howard University broke ground on the historic Myrtilla Miner Building on the first day of Black History Month. Constructed in 1913, the building originally served as a teacher-training school for African Americans and is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places for its significant role in Black Education in Washington, DC.
MCN is honored to have been selected to rehabilitate this 109-year-old building as a part of Howard University’s most immense campus redevelopment project in history. The restored building will house the Howard University School of Education and the Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Sciences, echoing its original use. The Myrtilla Miner Building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places for its significant role in Black Education in Washington, DC. The approximately eighty thousand square feet of the building were constructed in 1913 and served as a teacher-training school for African Americans. |

Howard University Center Of Excellence
MCN reprogrammed Howard University’s incubator lab to house their five Centers of Excellence (COE), including Behavioral Health, Oral Health, Sickle Cell Disease, Trauma and Violence Prevention, and Women’s Health. The COE provides students and faculty space for medical research, studying, and large-scale events. This modernization involved the installation of a human body scanner and ultra reality scanner and updated the mechanical and electrical systems. The COE’s programs, initiatives, and research will improve population health and advance health equity in the District and beyond.
Howard University Undergraduate Library
MCN Build provided preconstruction and general contracting services for the Howard University Undergraduate Library. The project consisted of a three-story renovation joined to the historic Howard University Founders library next door. Interior finishes and MEP systems were upgraded, and extensive waterproofing and facade repairs were done to protect the new finishes.
Modernizing the space to meet the needs of the campus included the integration of technology to support the new-age learning environment. The open space plan encourages collaboration and equitable space for student body engagement within the collaboration spaces and quiet study areas. The library renovation includes the expansion of document/book storage on the Archives level.
De La Cruz Art Gallery – Georgetown University
The Maria and Alberto de la Cruz Gallery provides art space for sculpture, paintings, and installations. Georgetown University’s 2,500 SF gallery features a commanding two-story glass curtainwall separate entrance and a new mechanical mezzanine with museum-grade mechanical systems.
Howard University Inclusive Innovation Incubator
MCN Build provided an interior fit-out of shell space for the new Inclusive Innovation Incubator Luma Lab at Howard University. This prominent venture provides opportunities for professional growth for students and the surrounding community.
University of Georgia – Semester in DC
MCN Build renovated the 20,000 SF University of Georgia, Washington, DC Semester program space. The building facade was restored, and the facility now includes overnight accommodations for 32 scholars, classrooms, and meeting areas.
Gallaudet University Flex Space
MCN Build transformed an existing dining room into a game room for Gallaudet University students. The new common area provides an additional social environment for students.
